Painted wood turtles, known scientifically as Rhinoclemmys pulcherrima (Gray, 1855), can reach a maximum length of 20 centimeters. This species has a dome-shaped carapace, and its plastron features a continuous ventral line. Red stripes mark the turtle's body, and it has webbed feet. The species is distributed across Mexico, ranging from Sonora southwards, through Central America, and extends as far south as Costa Rica and Panama. Painted wood turtles inhabit rainforests, shallow rivers, and bushes. While they are mostly terrestrial, they can occasionally be found in shallow water.
