About Rhingia campestris Meigen, 1822

This is a description of Rhingia campestris Meigen, 1822, a member of the Diptera order. Adults have a wing length between 5.5 and 7 millimeters. Their snout is straight, and when viewed from the side, it is longer than the diameter of the eye. The tergites have black edges along the hind margin and side margins, and they often have an additional black mark in the center of the tergite. The pre-genital sternite has black hairs, and the tibiae are red. This species is distributed across the Palearctic realm. Its range extends from Fennoscandia south to the Pyrenees, Spain, and the Mediterranean basin. It is also found in Ireland, and extends eastward through Europe into European Russia and the Caucasus, continuing on to Siberia, Mongolia, and the Russian Far East, reaching as far east as the Pacific coast.
