About Rhinella horribilis (Wiegmann, 1833)

Rhinella horribilis is the scientific name applied to cane toad (also called giant toad) populations found in Mesoamerica and north-western South America, when these populations are classified as a distinct species separate from Rhinella marina. When this separation is recognized, the name Rhinella marina is mostly restricted to cane toad populations living in the Amazon basin. Originally described from Mexico under the name Bufo horribilis, R. horribilis was later treated as a synonym of Bufo marina, and then subsequently as a synonym of Rhinella marina. The specific epithet horribilis has now been restored, after a 2016 study proposed that these two populations actually represent two separate species.
