About Rhexia mariana L.
Rhexia mariana L. produces distinct, symmetrical flowers that range in color from white to various shades of lavender. It has anthers that measure 4–11 mm in length, and these anthers are most often yellow or orange. Leaf size varies widely depending on the growing conditions. Its leaves are arranged oppositely, and have a shape between lanceolate and lance-oblong. While usually only one vein is visible per leaf, each leaf actually has three veins; the variety Rhexia mariana var. exalbida sometimes only develops one visible vein per leaf. Leaf edges are serrate, and hairs are present on the leaves. The stem of Rhexia mariana is square and covered in fine hairs. This species is native to North America, where it ranges from New York south to Florida and west to Texas. It typically grows in marshy, fully sunlit wet areas, and prefers moist, acidic soil with a pH of 6 or lower that is either loamy or sandy. Rhexia mariana var. exalbida occurs in drier soils than other variants of the species, and is one of the more aggressively spreading varieties. Rhexia mariana does not grow well in shade, and it is recommended as a good wildflower choice for beginner gardeners who can provide it with full sun and moist, acidic soil.
