About Rhagio mystaceus (Macquart, 1840)

Rhagio mystaceus, first described by Macquart in 1840, has an overall dark body colour. Adult males grow to 7–9 mm in length, while adult females reach 6–8 mm. Its thorax bears three dark stripes running along its dorsal surface. Normally, a very thin pale line runs down the middle of the central stripe. Yellowish rings occur on the posterior edge of each abdominal segment. In some specimens, the basal abdominal segment is mostly yellowish, with a black spot on both its dorsal and lateral surfaces. The wings bear a pattern, and have dark tips. This fly species occurs in central and eastern North America, east of the Great Plains.
