About Rhaebo haematiticus (Cope, 1862)

Rhaebo haematiticus, originally described as Bufo haematiticus by Cope in 1862, is a toad species that belongs to the Bufonidae family. This species is distributed across eastern Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, northwestern Venezuela's Serranía del Perijá, and northwestern Ecuador. It occurs at elevations ranging from sea level up to 1,300 meters (4,300 feet) above sea level. Its natural habitats are primary tropical moist forest and submontane humid forest. Rhaebo haematiticus is a nocturnal leaf-litter species; during the breeding season, it can be found alongside small streams and large rivers. It can tolerate a limited amount of habitat degradation, but only lives in areas close to forest. Threats to this species include habitat loss from agriculture, wood extraction, and cattle ranching, as well as localized threats from oil pollution and dams.
