About Restio subverticillatus (Steud.) Mast.
Restio subverticillatus, commonly known as the whorled restio, is a flowering plant species belonging to the Restionaceae family. This species is endemic to the southwestern Cape Provinces of South Africa. It is a tufted perennial plant that reaches 2.5 m (8.2 ft) in height and 1.5 m (4.9 ft) in spread, with arching, reed-like stems. Modified branches growing at each node form whorls of foliage. The species is dioecious, meaning female and male reproductive structures grow on separate individual plants. It flowers in spring; female flowers are white, while male flowers are yellow or grey. This plant has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit. It is mainly cultivated for its elegant, arching foliage. Because it cannot tolerate temperatures below freezing, it needs winter protection when grown in colder regions.
