This species has the scientific name Reinwardtipicus validus, first published by Temminck in 1825. It is commonly known as the orange-backed woodpecker, and has previously been classified under the scientific name Chrysocolaptes validus. It is a member of the woodpecker family Picidae. Its distribution covers southern Thailand, Malaya, Sarawak and Sabah (Malaysia), Brunei, Sumatra, and Java. It is a forest specialist species that occurs primarily in forest canopies.
