Rattus tanezumi (Temminck, 1845), commonly called the tanezumi rat, is also known by other common names including the Asian rat, Asian house rat, and yellow-breasted or buff-breasted rat; it was previously classified under the scientific name Rattus flavipectus. This species is a rodent that belongs to the family Muridae. It is closely related to the black rat, Rattus rattus. It has a widespread distribution across eastern, southern, and southeastern Asia, and has also been recorded in Fiji and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Confirmed locations where it can be found include Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
