About Rana tagoi Okada, 1928
Rana tagoi, commonly called Tago's brown frog or Tago frog, is a species of frog in the family Ranidae that is endemic to Japan. It is widely distributed across Japan, where it occurs on the main islands of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, as well as on some outlying islands. Two subspecies are currently recognized: Rana tagoi okiensis found on the Oki Islands, and Rana tagoi yakushimensis found on Yakushima. Some evidence suggests these two subspecies may be distinct enough to qualify as separate full species. This species can also undergo genetic introgression with its sister species, Rana sakuraii. This frog lives in mountainous areas near streams. Individuals are typically found in leaf litter close to streams, or under stones within the streams themselves. This species lays its eggs in subterranean rivers, where tadpoles develop until they mature into adult frogs. In late spring, the frogs' croaking calls can be heard from above ground.
