About Raja montagui Fowler, 1910
Like all rays, the spotted ray (Raja montagui Fowler, 1910) has a flattened body with broad, wing-shaped pectoral fins. Its overall body shape is sub-rhomboid. The dorsal (upper) surface of the body is brown and marked with dark spots. This species reaches a maximum total length of 80 cm (2.6 ft), which makes it one of the smallest skates. The spotted ray occurs in the Atlantic Ocean, ranging from the Irish Sea south to Morocco, and it is also found in the Mediterranean Sea. Spotted rays are oviparous, and they lay their eggs during the summer. After an incubation period of 5 to 6 months, the fully formed pups hatch, measuring approximately 11.5 cm (4.5 in) long at hatching.
