About Rabdophaga salicisbrassicoides (Packard, 1869)

Rabdophaga salicisbrassicoides is commonly known as either the willow rosette gall midge or the willow cabbage gall midge. It is a species of gall midge that belongs to the family Cecidomyiidae. The galls and larvae of this species develop successfully in association with the mutualistic relationship between Formica neoclara ants and Chaitophorus aphids, which is found on the species' host plant Salix exigua. Rabdophaga salicisbrassicoides larvae overwinter inside their galls, and adult individuals emerge in late April.
