About Quercus pumila Walter

Quercus pumila, commonly called runner oak or running oak, is a species of oak. It is native to the southeastern United States, where it occurs in Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. It is a deciduous shrub that typically grows less than 1 meter (3 feet 3 inches) tall. Its bark is gray or dark brown. Its leaves can reach up to 10 centimeters (4 inches) in length, and do not have teeth or lobes. The upper leaf surface is hairless or nearly hairless, while the underside usually is covered in a thick layer of reddish-brown hairs. This oak species grows in a range of habitats including pine flatwoods, multiple types of pinelands, and longleaf pine-oak stands. It also grows in disturbed areas, such as alongside roadsides.
