About Quercus phillyreoides A.Gray

Quercus phillyreoides A.Gray is a species of flowering plant in the genus Quercus, classified in subgenus Cerris and section Ilex. This evergreen species can tolerate frost and can be grown in hardiness zone 7. It is native to southern China, the Ryukyu Islands, and Japan, and has been introduced to Korea. In Japan, this species, also called ubame oak, is used to make binchōtan, a traditional type of vegetal activated carbon. It has also been planted as a street tree in several European cities.
