About Quercus glaucoides M.Martens & Galeotti
Quercus glaucoides M.Martens & Galeotti is an evergreen canopy tree in its native habitat. It grows up to 10 metres (33 feet) tall, with a trunk diameter that exceeds 40 centimetres (16 inches). Its leaves are thick, leathery, reach up to 15 cm (6 in) in length, and bear a small number of shallow rounded lobes. This species' scientific name is very often incorrectly applied to Lacey oak (Quercus laceyi), a native of northeast Mexico and central Texas. This misapplication has caused significant confusion about both the true identity of Quercus glaucoides and the correct scientific name for Lacey oak. While the two species are somewhat closely related, they differ in native range and leaf retention: Quercus glaucoides is endemic to Mexico and is evergreen, while Quercus laceyi is native to both northeast Mexico and central Texas and is deciduous.
