About Pyura gibbosa (Heller, 1878)
Pyura gibbosa is a species of sea squirt belonging to the family Pyuridae. It was first described in 1878 by Camill Heller, under the original name Cynthia gibbosa. This is a sessile, subtropical species that occurs in temperate seas along the coasts of all Australian states except the Northern Territory. Pyura gibbosa is hermaphroditic, and can reproduce through both cross-fertilization and self-fertilization. Its eggs develop into larvae, which then metamorphose into adult individuals. A thorough description of this species was published by Patricia Kott in a 1985 paper.
