About Pyropterus nigroruber (De Geer, 1774)
Pyropterus nigroruber is a small net-winged beetle that reaches an adult body length of approximately 7.5–10 millimetres (0.30–0.39 in). It has an elongated, flattened body, with a black head and black pronotum. Its elytra are brick-red, marked with four longitudinal carinae connected by weak transverse lines. Its long, thick, serrate antennae have eleven antennal segments, where segments two and three are very short and almost equal in length. Adult Pyropterus nigroruber can be found from June to August. This species has predaceous larvae that pupate in rotten wood, most commonly in dead birch timber; larvae feed on small insects. Pyropterus nigroruber occurs across most European countries and the eastern Palearctic realm, and inhabits moist forests in both lowlands and highlands.
