About Pyrops watanabei (Matsumura, 1913)

Pyrops watanabei is a planthopper species that is endemic to Taiwan. It was first described by Shōnen Matsumura in 1913, originally published under the name Fulgora watanabei. Pyrops atroalbus was formerly treated as a subspecies of Pyrops watanabei, but its status as a separate full species was reinstated in 2017.

This species has a yellow cephalic process with an inflated apex. Its abdomen is red on the ventral side. Its forewings (tegmina) are mostly white, with three black spots located on the leading costal edge. The hindwings can be either entirely white, or have a black apical third. Individuals of this species reach approximately 4 centimeters (1.6 inches) in total length. Pyrops watanabei has been recorded living on two plant species: Triadica sebifera and Sapium discolor.
