About Pyrisitia nise (Cramer, 1775)
Pyrisitia nise, commonly known as the mimosa yellow, is a butterfly species belonging to the family Pieridae. This species can be found ranging from Argentina north to the Texas Gulf Coast, and throughout all of central and southern Florida, with its northern range extending to the Tennessee Valley. It occurs as an occasional stray in central Texas and southeastern Arizona, and is rarely found as far out as southern California, southern Colorado, and Kansas. Its preferred habitat is made up of brushy woodland edges. The wingspan of this butterfly measures between 29 and 51 mm, which is equal to 1.1 to 2.0 inches. Both male and female individuals of Pyrisitia nise are yellow in color. The upperside of the forewing has narrow black outer edges. Black margins on the hindwing are uncommon in males, and are always completely absent in females. Adults are active on the wing from May to August in southern Florida, from September to November in southern Texas, and are active year round in the tropics. Adult butterflies feed on flower nectar, while the caterpillar larvae feed on Mimosa pudica.
