About Pyrgus centaureae (Rambur, 1839)
While Pyrgus centaureae is generally similar to most other species in the Pyrgus genus, it has a greyer brown background wing color, with bold white spots present on both the forewing and the hindwing. Unlike most other Pyrgus species, the veins on the underside of its wings are obviously outlined in white. Its wingspan ranges from 25 to 33 mm. Seitz provided the following description: H. centaureae Rambur. (86 a) is a large, dark species with very distinct white dots and spots. The underside of the hindwing is dark brown or blackish with a greenish tint. The brown band that forms the outer edge of the white band has spots, and forms the inner border of a white terminal band. This white terminal band appears divided by a row of strong brown dots, resulting in two white bands located beyond the median band. This species occurs in Scandinavia, Finland, the Altai, and also in North America. It can be found active in June and July.
