About Pyrenaria microcarpa (Dunn) H.Keng
Pyrenaria microcarpa (Dunn) H.Keng grows as a shrub or medium-sized tree, reaching a height of roughly 1 to 15 meters (3 to 49 feet). Its leaves are leathery, with shapes ranging from elliptic, obovate to oblong-lanceolate, and have serrated margins. Leaves measure about 8 to 13 centimeters (3.1 to 5.1 inches) in length. The flowers of this species are axillary and grow singly; each flower has five white or pale yellow petals, and is around 2 to 2.5 centimeters (0.8 to 1.0 inch) across. Its fruits are roughly ovoid or globose capsules, about 1.5 to 2 centimeters (0.6 to 0.8 inch) long. Each of the three locules inside the fruit holds three chestnut brown seeds. This species flowers from April to July, and its fruits ripen from August to November. Pyrenaria microcarpa is native to south-central and southeast China, Hainan, Myanmar, the Ryukyu Islands (Nansei-shoto), Taiwan, and Vietnam. It grows in mountain forests or alongside streams, at elevations between approximately 300 and 1,000 meters (980 to 3,280 feet) above sea level.
