About Pycnoporellus fulgens (Fr.) Donk
Pycnoporellus fulgens is a fungus that causes brown rot and inhabits dead conifer logs. It most commonly produces fruiting bodies in late summer, during July and August. These fruiting bodies are typically found growing on the sides of logs. They are tough and woody with a shelf-like shape, and are usually orange or orange-red in color, with a yellower leading edge. The underside of the fruiting body has a complex pore surface that is white or yellow. This fungus is often found in conifer forests, where it grows on dead conifer logs. Dead logs of Norway Spruce and Douglas Fir are two recorded examples of conifer material this species may inhabit.
