About Pycnonotus taivanus Styan, 1893

Scientific name: Pycnonotus taivanus Styan, 1893

Styan's bulbul is very similar in appearance to the light-vented bulbul, but the two species differ in the patterns on their heads. Styan's bulbul has a fully black crown, with white feathers surrounding its eye, and a distinct black moustachial stripe located below the beak. Hybrids between Styan's bulbul and the light-vented bulbul have traits that are intermediate between the two parent species: they have the moustachial stripe and white feathers around the eye, but their white feathers extend behind the crown.
