This species, commonly called the African red-eyed bulbul, has a scientific name of Pycnonotus nigricans (Vieillot, 1818). Adults of the African red-eyed bulbul measure between 19 and 21 centimeters (7 to 8 inches) in total length, and weigh between 30 and 48 grams (1 to 1.7 ounces). The species' call is a sequence of loud, fluty notes, and this call is most often produced only by male bulbuls.
