About Puya dasylirioides Standl.

Puya dasylirioides Standl. is a species of plant in the genus Puya, native to Costa Rica. It is an unusual Puya species because its leaves have no spines along their margins. Its flowers are blue, and it has brown buds. Plants of this species reach maturity in 4 to 5 years. Another unique characteristic of this species is its growth habit: it grows in seasonally drying boggy areas located at 3000 m elevation.

In its native range, Puya dasylirioides grows at elevations between 2300 and 3300 meters, where the climate stays cool year-round. It can tolerate temperatures up to 30 °C, but it may not thrive in consistently warmer conditions, especially when nights are warm. It is recorded to have survived winter lows of 19 °F (-7 °C), and it may be able to tolerate even colder temperatures. It grows well in a deep pot filled with standard lime-free cactus soil. In warmer climates, it may need some protection from strong afternoon sun.
