Purpuradusta fimbriata was first described by Gmelin in 1791. The shell of this species reaches a size that ranges between 7 mm and 21 mm. This species, along with its subspecies, is distributed in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean, where it occurs off the coasts of Aldabra, Chagos, the Comores, Kenya, Madagascar, the Mascarene Basin, Mauritius, Mozambique, Réunion, the Seychelles, Somalia and Tanzania. It is also found in the Pacific Ocean off Japan.
