About Puffinus subalaris Ridgway, 1897
Puffinus subalaris Ridgway, 1897, commonly known as the Galápagos shearwater, has dark brown upperparts, undertail, and underwing flight feathers. All other underpart plumage is white, and the species sometimes has a dark collar. Males, females, and fledged young look identical to one another. This is a slender-bodied shearwater that measures roughly 29 to 31 cm in length, has a wingspan of around 63 cm, and weighs between 123 and 225 grams. This species looks very similar to the tropical shearwater, but the tropical shearwater is typically blacker and has a longer tail.
