Puffinus subalaris Ridgway, 1897, commonly known as the Galápagos shearwater, has dark brown upperparts, undertail, and underwing flight feathers. All other underpart plumage is white, and the species sometimes has a dark collar. Males, females, and fledged young look identical to one another. This is a slender-bodied shearwater that measures roughly 29 to 31 cm in length, has a wingspan of around 63 cm, and weighs between 123 and 225 grams. This species looks very similar to the tropical shearwater, but the tropical shearwater is typically blacker and has a longer tail.
