About Puccinia malvacearum Bertero ex Mont.
Puccinia malvacearum Bertero ex Mont., commonly called hollyhock rust or mallow rust, is a fungal species belonging to the genus Puccinia. It is well-known for infecting plants that are members of the plant family Malvaceae. This organism is an autoecious pathogen, meaning it can complete its full life cycle using only a single host plant. The species was first discovered growing on the leaves of a Malva species in Chile. Other genera of plants affected by this rust include Abutilon, Alcea (hollyhock), Hibiscus, Lavatera, Malvastrum, and Sphaeralcea. In the United States, suggested control measures for this pathogen include sanitation practices such as removing or destroying affected plants or affected plant parts, or treating affected areas with fungicides.
