About Puccinia coronata Corda

Puccinia coronata Corda is a plant pathogen that causes crown rust in oats and barley. This pathogen is found worldwide, and infects both wild and cultivated oats. Crown rust threatens barley production, as early-season initial infections in barley develop from local inoculum. In response to host resistance, crown rust fungi have evolved many different physiological races within different species. Each pathogenic race is able to attack a specific line of plants within its typical host species. For example, there are more than 290 known races of P. coronata. Resistant crop varieties are often released to combat the disease, but within a few years new virulent races of P. coronata emerge that are able to infect these resistant crops.
