This species was first formally described by Michael Denis and Ignaz Schiffermüller in 1775. It occurs in the southern regions of the Palearctic realm. The wingspan of adult Ptilophora plumigera ranges between 33 and 44 mm. The adult moth is active and flies from October to November, with the exact timing varying based on location. The larvae of this moth feed on maple plants.
