About Pteruthius flaviscapis (Temminck, 1836)

The pied shrike-babbler, with the scientific name Pteruthius flaviscapis, was traditionally classified as an unusual Old World babbler and placed in the family Timaliidae. Current evidence indicates it actually belongs to an Asian lineage derived from American vireos, and may correctly be placed in the family Vireonidae. Observers have long noted that this species' habits are similar to those of vireos, but this similarity was previously thought to be the product of convergent evolution. This bird species is endemic to the island of Java. It was formerly treated as a subspecies of the white-browed shrike-babbler.
