About Pterostylis hispidula Fitzg.

Pterostylis hispidula Fitzg. is a terrestrial, perennial, deciduous herb that grows from an underground tuber. It produces a rosette of three to six egg-shaped to oblong leaves. Each leaf measures 10โ€“40 mm (0.4โ€“2 in) long and 5โ€“15 mm (0.2โ€“0.6 in) wide, is green to yellowish in color, has a wavy or crinkled edge, and grows on a distinct petiole. A single nodding, forward-leaning flower is borne on a flowering stem 150โ€“300 mm (6โ€“10 in) tall. The flower is translucent white with green stripes and a reddish tip, and measures 14โ€“18 mm (0.6โ€“0.7 in) long and 8โ€“10 mm (0.3โ€“0.4 in) wide. A wide gap sits on each side of the flower between the petals and the lateral sepals. The lateral sepals have tapering tips 5โ€“8 mm (0.2โ€“0.3 in) long, and a deeply notched sinus between them. The labellum protrudes from the flower; it is 9โ€“12 mm (0.4โ€“0.5 in) long, about 2 mm (0.08 in) wide, curved, dark-colored, and covered in short, bristly hairs. Flowering takes place from March to July. This species is found from Fraser Island, Queensland southward to Batemans Bay, New South Wales. It grows in a range of habitats, from coastal scrub to rainforest margins.
