The white-headed petrel, Pterodroma lessonii, is distinct for its pale white head and prominent dark eye patch. It has long, narrow wings and a long, pointed tail. Its upper surface is pale grey, which contrasts with the darker grey colouring of its upper wings and rump. Most of its underside is white. Its bill is stout and black, with a large, sharp hook. Its green glands are prominent. Its legs range from pinkish to whitish, with black patches on the toes.
