About Pterocles indicus (Gmelin, 1789)
The painted sandgrouse, scientifically known as Pterocles indicus (Gmelin, 1789), is a plump, ground-dwelling bird with a small head and short legs. Males and females of this species have different coloration. Males have an orange bill, a black bar crossing their white forehead, fine black longitudinal lines on the nape, and a white patch of bare skin surrounding the eye. They have a broad black and white band around the chest, uniform pinkish-brown breast and belly, and brown back, wings, and tail that are boldly marked with black and white transverse bars. Females are duller in appearance, with an overall greyish brown color marked with darker brown and white bars and speckles.
