About Pteroceltis tatarinowii Maxim.
Pteroceltis tatarinowii Maxim. is a tree species that is endemic to China, and it is the only surviving member of the genus Pteroceltis. Its common names are blue sandalwood, wingceltis, Tatar-wingceltis, and qing tan (Chinese: 青檀; pinyin: qīngtán). Mature trees of this species reach up to 20 meters (66 feet) in height. This tree has multiple practical uses: its wood is used as timber, its bark fiber is used to make Xuan paper, and oil can be extracted from its seeds. In 1907, collector Frank Meyer gathered seeds of this species, brought them to America, and gave the seeds to the USDA. One of these seeds germinated and grew into a fully mature tree at the Morris Arboretum, located outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
