About Psyche casta (Pallas, 1767)

Psyche casta (Pallas, 1767) is a nocturnal moth belonging to Psychidae, the bagworm moth family. Males have a wingspan between 12 and 15 millimeters, with hairy, brown-metallic shiny wings. Females are grub-like: they have legs, lack wings entirely, and are yellowish or light brown in body color, aside from dark brown back plates. This moth species uses host plants from several groups, including Poaceae, birch, willow, poplar, and Vaccinium. Its caterpillars construct a protective hull from grass. Adult moths fly between May and July each year. Psyche casta is originally native to the Old World, and has since been introduced to North America.
