About Psittacula calthrapae (Blyth, 1849)

Layard's parakeet, scientifically named Psittacula calthrapae (Blyth, 1849), is a green parrot. It measures 29 cm (11 in) in total length, which includes a tail that can reach up to 13 cm (5.1 in) long. Adult individuals have bluish-grey heads and backs, with these two color areas separated by a green collar. They also have a broad black chin stripe, and a blue tail tipped with yellow. In adult males, the upper mandible of the bill is red, while the lower mandible is brown. Adult females have a similar overall appearance to males, but they have an entirely black beak, and less green on their faces than males. Immature Layard's parakeets are mainly green, and have an orange bill.
