About Psilopogon pulcherrimus (Sharpe, 1888)
Psilopogon pulcherrimus is a medium-sized barbet, measuring 20 to 21.5 centimeters long, with an overall stocky build. It has a thick, distinctive bill. Its body is primarily green, with darker green wings than underparts. The forehead has an azure blue coloring that extends up to the nape, and there is also blue coloring on the throat. A small, distinct yellow patch on the nape forms a collar. A distinctive black band runs from the base of the bill to the eye. It has black pupils and black mandibles, and its tarsus is greyish green. This species is endemic to the lowland and montane forests of Borneo, where it is presumed to be a resident species. It is most often reported from Mount Kinabalu and Trus Madi, ranging south to Mulu and Murud. It primarily feeds on fruits and berries, and occasionally eats insects, like other barbet species. It is typically found foraging in the mid-storey layer of the forest, and is known to nest in tree cavities.
