About Psilopogon faiostrictus (Temminck, 1832)

The green-eared barbet has the scientific name Psilopogon faiostrictus (Temminck, 1832). In terms of characteristics, this species measures 24.5 to 27 cm in total length. It is a plump bird, with a short neck, a large head, and a short tail. Adult green-eared barbets have brown heads and breasts marked with white streaks, green ear coverts, a mainly dark bill, and a yellow belly streaked with green. The rest of the bird’s plumage is green. Both male and female adults, and immature birds, have similar plumage and appearance. This species looks similar to the lineated barbet, but is smaller in size, has a distinct green ear patch, a darker bill, and a dark rather than yellow eye-ring. For distribution and habitat, the green-eared barbet is a resident breeding species found in southern China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. It lives in broadleaf evergreen forests, mixed woodlands, and open woodlands, at elevations up to 900 m (3,000 ft). In terms of behaviour and ecology, the green-eared barbet nests inside tree holes.
