The subspecies Pseudoxenodon stejnegeri stejnegeri reaches a maximum total length of 90 cm (35.4 in). This species is oviparous. It inhabits dense mountain forests at elevations between 400 and 2,100 m (1,300–6,900 ft) above sea level. It is typically found near water, where it forages for amphibians. In Taiwan, the altitudinal range of this species is 1,000–2,500 m (3,300–8,200 ft).
