This species is an obligate ectoparasite that is specific to hosts in the bird family Columbidae. It can potentially be found in many regions across the world where domestic pigeons are kept. It has been recorded on wild or feral Columbidae hosts in continental Africa, the Mediterranean Sub-region, Afghanistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, Taiwan, the Ryukyu Islands, the Philippines, Malaya, Indonesia, and warmer latitudes of North America and South America.
