About Pseudocrenilabrus philander (Weber, 1897)

Pseudocrenilabrus philander, commonly known as the southern mouth-brooder, is a small haplochromine cichlid species native to southern and central Africa. This species was first described in 1897 by German-Dutch zoologist Max Carl Wilhelm Weber. Its distribution ranges across southern Africa, starting from the Orange River system and southern Natal, extending northward to the southern tributaries of the Congo. It is also found in rivers and lagoons connected to Lake Malawi, though it does not live within the lake itself, and it occurs in Lake Rukwa. The species has a wide environmental tolerance, and can be found in many different habitat types including streams, lakes, ponds, and sinkholes. Some populations live in slightly brackish conditions. It typically prefers areas with dense vegetation.
