This species, commonly called the Texas river cooter, is a relatively large turtle. Adults can grow to a shell length of over 12 inches, which equals 30.5 centimeters. Their base color is green, with distinct yellow and black markings that fade as individual turtles get older. Males and females can be told apart by several physical traits: males have longer tails, longer claws, and are smaller overall than females.
