It belongs to the genus Pseudanthias, which is in the subfamily Anthiinae, part of the family Serranidae — the family that includes groupers and sea basses. This species occurs in the Indo-Pacific, ranging from the Maldives to Samoa, north to the Ryukyu Islands, and south to the Great Barrier Reef. It sometimes enters the aquarium trade. This fish reaches a maximum length of 19 centimeters, which equals 7.5 inches.
