About Psarocolius angustifrons (Spix, 1824)

The russet-backed oropendola, with the scientific name Psarocolius angustifrons, is a bird species that belongs to the Icteridae family. It inhabits wooded environments in the highlands of the northern and central Andes, the Venezuelan Coastal Range, and the lowlands of the western Amazon. This species is generally common and has a large, widespread range. Males are larger than females, but the two sexes do not differ in appearance in any other way. Most of its plumage is olive and brown, and its outer tail feathers (rectrices) are a contrasting bright yellow. The nominate lowland subspecies has a black bill, while all highland subspecies have pale bills. These different population groups were once considered to be separate distinct species, but because they hybridize freely with one another, all major taxonomic authorities now treat them as a single species.
