About Prunus serrulata Lindl.

Prunus serrulata, commonly called Japanese cherry, is a species of wild cherry tree native to Japan, China, Korea, and Vietnam. The name Prunus serrulata is also sometimes used to refer to a cultivar derived from Prunus speciosa, the Oshima cherry, a cherry species endemic to Japan.

Historically, Japanese people developed many ornamental cherry tree cultivars through selective breeding. These cultivars come from complicated cross-breeding between multiple wild cherry species, and are now grown as ornamentals across the world. Among this group, cultivars that are complex interspecific hybrids derived from Oshima cherry are classified as the Cerasus Sato-zakura Group.
