About Protoparmeliopsis garovaglii (Körb.) Arup, Zhao Xin & Lumbsch
Protoparmeliopsis garovaglii is a saxicolous, or rock-dwelling, crustose lichen that belongs to the family Lecanoraceae. German lichenologist Gustav Wilhelm Körber originally described this species in 1859 under the name Placodium garovaglii. In 1900, the species was reclassified into the genus Lecanora, and it was recognized as a member of this genus for over one hundred years. Molecular phylogenetic research demonstrated that the original genus Lecanora was highly polyphyletic. As a result of this finding, the genus was split into multiple smaller genera that are more phylogenetically natural. This led to the transfer of Lecanora garovaglii to the genus Protoparmeliopsis in 2015.
