About Protographium asius (Fabricius, 1781)

This species is scientifically named Protographium asius (Fabricius, 1781). Upperside description: The antennae, thorax, and abdomen are black. Both pairs of wings are deep raven black. A pale yellow band starts at the anterior edges near the tips of the forewings (superior wings), crosses both the forewings and hindwings (inferior wings), ends level with the abdomen, and gradually widens along its length. The posterior (hind) wings have two tails. Along their outer edges are four small yellow crescents, plus an additional yellow crescent at the abdominal corners. Above these yellow crescents sit two long, square red spots, and there is another yellow crescent along the abdominal edge. Underside description: The palpi, legs, and breast are black. The abdomen is black, with a white longitudinal stripe running along each side. Wing markings are almost identical to those on the upperside. The posterior hindwings have several more red spots and streaks than are present on the upperside; these extra markings are located next to the body, extending from the shoulders to the abdominal corners. This species has a wingspan of 3 inches (76 mm).
