About Proteuxoa tetronycha Hoare, 2017

Adult Proteuxoa tetronycha have a wingspan ranging from 29 to 33 mm. This species looks very similar to Proteuxoa comma. It can be distinguished from P. comma by its paler prothorax and the browner base color of its forewings. There are also distinguishing features between females of the two species. Female P. tetronycha have an ovipositor, the tubular organ female moths use to lay eggs, that lacks the spiny hair-like structures found on the ovipositor of P. comma. This species is endemic to New Zealand, and can be found throughout the country. As of 2017, however, it has not been recorded from the Chatham Islands.
