About Protea simplex E.Phillips

Protea simplex E.Phillips is a small, flattened plant that grows to 16 cm (6.3 in) in diameter. It flowers between December and March, and is able to resprout after wildfires. Its seeds are stored in a protective shell, released 9 to 12 months after development, and dispersed by wind. The species is unisexual, and pollination is carried out by birds. This protea occurs on the Drakensberg escarpment, ranging from Mariepskop through Mpumalanga and Eswatini to Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal. It grows in open, mat-like grasslands on acid soil, at altitudes between 1,300 and 2,150 m (4,270–7,050 ft).
